Click go the shears …

Well, these days it’s more buzzz go the shears, but either way shearing season is in full swing. Some of our members attended an alpaca shearing morning at Joe and Julie’s Petlyn in October. Julie invited anyone interested to help out with jobs such as packing up fleeces and marking off animals. Morning tea, lunch and cold drinks were provided, and fleeces were available! Article with photos below.

Our Jane has been globe trotting and attending workshops in the UK, posting heaps of photos of her travels on Facebook. Amanda has returned from Japan with stories, and many other members are planning trips abroad later this year and next year. We seem to be a well travelled group!

The Albury Show has come and gone, and the rooms are back open for weekly meetings. We have had more visitors, potential new members, and donations of books and equipment. Between that and our regulars knitting, crocheting, spinning and weaving, Wednesdays have become quite busy of late.

Also in relation to the Guild rooms, the Showground Secretary has requested that we do not park on the concrete under the grandstand. Apparently there is a water pipe that runs near the front edge of the concrete which breaks when cars run over it. Please keep that in mind as the weather warms up. Perhaps our next use-up-the-acrylic-stash project should be windscreen or dashboard sun protectors!

With the year quickly disappearing we’ve started organising for our Christmas meeting and morning tea. For those of us still in the country and attending, the “bring a plate” this year is whatever you like, sweet or savory.

Show & Tell is a bit of a mixed bag this issue with all the folks away and room closures for the Albury Show, so strap in for a rollercoaster ride …

Cheers all,
KathyW, Editor.

Spring bounty

The change of seasons brings on lush new growth in the orchard, which is fortunate as the largely dry winter has meant reduced pasture regrowth. The mulberry trees are a favourite with the sheep, and at least one has discovered she can balance on her hind legs and reach the leaves out of reach to most of the flock. Another canny sheep uses the fences as a climbing ladder, or walk their front legs up the main trunk.

The change of season has also seen a change in the palatability of the nettles growing in lush stands in the alpaca girls’ paddock. Quite a few of the girls have been wading through the tall growth and nibbling on the leaves. In fact their efforts have also managed to flatten the nettles, which will help them to break down and return to the earth.

With the nettles largely trampled, the remaining weeds have been exposed and the sheep have enthusiastically acted as weed control when they are let in every few days.

Reka helps herself to nettle leaves, while Maru moves in looking for the barn cat.

The sheep on weed control – helping reduce a lush stand of cape weed in the alpaca retirement paddock. The alpacas, all males, have been moved temporarily to an adjoining paddock.

More weed control, the sheep cleaning up various weeds in the alpaca girls’ top paddock after the nettles had been trampled.

One of the ewes helps herself to mulberry leaves, even the hard to reach ones!

Last words ...

A few housekeeping items:
1 – Some members have been getting spam type emails saying they are coming from Guild members. If anyone gets a suspicious looking message, do not open it or any links within it.
2 – Please do not park in front of the Guild’s side double doors or the undercover area. Park on the grassy areas only.
3 – The drain area outside the Guild door that fills up with water when it rains is becoming DANGEROUS with one of our members slipping in the mud and algae growing there. PLEASE KEEP WELL CLEAR OF THE DRAIN AND MUD even when it appears dry!

Newsletter contributions are always welcome. So, if anyone has anything they want to contribute, or requests for articles, email me!

Cheers for now,
