It’s starting to feel like winter approaching…

2025 is rolling on, the days are getting shorter, the nights longer. The temperature is heading south and gloves, socks, scarves, wraps and slippers are looking like very worthwhile projects.

We’ve had many successes at the local Shows, a big sort out of back room equipment, workshop fun and new members come to join us.

The back room sort out has resulted in surplus equipment that is available for sale. The current list is included towards the end of this newsletter for anyone interested.

Remember if you have any acrylic yarn surplus to your requirements, or need some for a particular project, there is a tub at the rooms that welcomes both donations and withdrawals. It has been particularly handy during our charity workshops.

As usual we’ll start the newsletter with the last two months Show & Tell.

Cheers all,
KathyW, Editor.

Trauma Teddies & Comfort Hearts Workshop

IMG_8416
Our March Workshop was knitted and crochet trauma teddies and comfort hearts. Patterns were provided and members encouraged to bring any spare toy filling and surplus acrylic yarn.

Yours truly was stuck at home by roadworks, but joined in spirit and yarn with crocheted comfort hearts.

Comfort hearts seemed to appeal to all participants this year as at the next meeting knitted, crocheted, sewn and decorated hearts were all generously donated.

Fleecy Follies

The_Boys_IMG_9609

The last few months have been fairly uneventful on the fleecy folly front, and I was wondering what to write about. Then two opportunities cropped up …

The eyes have it …

Alpacas have the most engaging big dark eyes, and being prey animals eyes are usually wide open and alert. So when an eye gets watery and an animal start squinting investigation is needed.

Tosh presented a few weeks ago with one weeping eye that she kept partially closed. She’s not the most co-operative of animals at the best of times – she kicks like a mule and spits at the slightest provocation, and she is very strong.

We were able to pen her and catch her fortunately without too much drama, perhaps because we had been expecting the worst!

On close inspection her left eye was fairly cloudy and abraded at the center. Usually these sorts of injuries are caused by grass seeds that get caught at the side or back of the eye, but there were no tell tale signs of grass seeds at all. It was possible she had somehow got the seed out, or it was also possible it was caused by something else – a poke in the eye by a stick or similar.

Antibiotic ointment was applied to the eye, much to Tosh’s annoyance. But she did not spit, and was released safely without incident. We watched her closely for the next few days – if there was a grass seed hiding at the back of the eye it would continue to irritate the eye and it would keep weeping. But the weeping stopped, and the eye slowly started healing.

Today there is barely a hint of the injury – just a small pale smudge that is slowly resolving.

Good girl Tosh!

And a sticky problem …

Over the last few years the alpaca girls paddock has been infested by stinkwort (dittrichia graveolens). It started in a small patch that we slashed repeatedly, but managed to spread throughout most of their paddocks. Ironically the original patch has remained clear of them for a couple of years!  The rest of the paddocks are too steep and rocky to slash 🙁

Stinkwort is a sticky herbaceous plant that has a strong odour when handled. Grass still grows up between it, although the lack of rain has meant grass regrowth is sparse.

So every summer lately as the girls graze, some of them have been getting a sticky residue on their faces and feet. As they roll around in their dust baths the dust sticks to faces and feet. Some worse that others. If it would rain the sticky dirty stain will wash off, but no rain for weeks makes for dirty alpacas!

Althogh it can be toxic, the sheep have been observed eating stinkwort plants, so they do not establish in the sheep paddocks. There is some evidence of the alpacas selectively nibbling on the plants as well.

Stinkwort has been used in traditional medicine for its antifungal, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and sedative properties. It’s also used to treat lice in chickens as an external application, according to a study published on the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Additionally, it has been shown to have analgesic, anti-arthritic, and anti-asthmatic properties.

Last words ...

A few housekeeping items:
1 – Some members have been getting spam type emails saying they are coming from Guild members. If anyone gets a suspicious looking message, do not open it or any links within it.
2 – Please do not park in front of the Guild’s side double doors. This could cause a problem in the case of an emergency. Please park in the undercover area well clear of the doors and grandstand stairs, or on the grass area.
3 – The drain area outside the Guild door that fills up with water when it rains is becoming DANGEROUS with one of our members slipping in the mud and algae growing there. PLEASE KEEP WELL CLEAR OF THE DRAIN AND MUD even when it appears dry!

Newsletter contributions are always welcome. So, if anyone has anything they want to contribute, or requests for articles, email me!
